OC Review – An insight in Development Operations (February edition)
Editor’s note
For the 2nd edition of the OC Review for 2017, we take a closer look at DEVOP and what happens behind the curtains. We will also try to find out more about one of TAW’s most exciting, currently ongoing projects: TAW 3.0 !
Who are you, Who is in your team, And what does [DEVOP] do?
I’m leroydev. I’m the head of Core Programming.
With me on the team are:
- 1st LT. inergy [DEVOP CO] (Head of Design)
- PFC PYXIS [DEVOP] (Design Programmer)
- PFC HiveFive [DEVOP] (Programmer)
- LTC primestick [DEVOP DC]
- Maj. TigerFang [DEVOP DO]
[DEVOP] is developing the upcoming new website for The art of Warfare [TAW], which is called TAW 3.0.
What is TAW 3.0?
TAW 3.0 is written from the ground up, using modern technologies. It aims to improve user experience, performance, and device compatibility. We aim to let it work on all devices. With TAW 3.0, we aim to make it unnecessary to have a complete rewrite in the future (TAW 4.0). Instead, we want to iterate upon TAW 3.0. We are doing this by using free, open source technology that works on all platforms. A list of all the technologies we are using can be found at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zThenfBk_UKk58kpjrFCJ0UF1iKbGCBubxdvLCHfZaA/edit.
What is the most challenging part of TAW 3.0?
There’s a twofold of complications for the TAW website:
- The website simply contains a lot of features, a lot of considerations regarding how permissions should be handled and considerations about migrating from TAW 2.0, which all contribute to the complexity and size of the project.
- We are volunteers who are doing this in our spare time, in between jobs and education.
When and how are others from our community capable of helping out?
If you know AngularJS, HTML and CSS, you’re able to help out on the frontend. You’re able to help out on the backend if you’re familiar with Node.js. We could also use an experienced Quality Assurance analyst, who would be responsible for checking if everything works as designed and documenting flaws encountered while testing.
If you had to describe TAW 3.0 in three words, what would they be and why?
Fast, easier (to use) and modernized.
Where can we find more information on [DEVOP] and developing overall?
More information on [DEVOP] and what we do can be found in our channel description (we are located in “Operations Command → Information Security Corps → Development Operations”) or by stopping in and talking to one of our members.
As for information on developing overall there are plenty of online resources such as www.codeacademy.com. For each programming language, there’s also books and documentation on the language.
Below is a list of resources for learning a few of the technologies we are using in TAW 3.0:
- Getting started with learning HTML, CSS and JavaScript: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Learn/Getting_started_with_the_web.
- Documentation for different experience levels of JavaScript: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript.
- A free book on JavaScript and Node.js: http://eloquentjavascript.net/.
- Getting started with Express.js: http://expressjs.com/en/starter/hello-world.html and http://expressjs.com/en/starter/basic-routing.html.
Are there any tips you could give your fellow members that want to learn developing?
leroydev: Personally, I started learning programming by creating a software product I found interesting. This was a filesharing website. You pick up knowledge as you advance in the project and will have an end result, as opposed to i.e. learning by reading tutorials.
And is there something else you would like to say to the readers?
We are spending as much time as we can on getting TAW 3.0 finished as soon as possible. If you can help us out, it could possibly result in TAW 3.0 getting finished even quicker, so don’t hesitate to join us! :)
Newsletter [NEWS]
NEWS would like to first remind everyone that the Army Review page is the best place to update other interested players who may not be in your division about what’s going on. Get with a member of the NEWS staff or your PIA to get the information you want TAW to know to us.
NEWS is also looking for new unique content to provide more to our members. More than anything, we want your stories. Did something funny happen in channel? Maybe you are sitting on a stack of hilarious Gump Medal tales. If so, send them our way. Maybe your shenanigans end up in the pages of From The Battlefield for all of TAW to see.

Update from Graphics Division
-Abnormalskillz
I'm glad to inform you that Graphic Division successfully working on all your graphics request. From the re-start of creating personal seals and avatars we did more than 100, without official request we did for several divisions in TAW community. We are happy about feedback which we got from members who requested graphics and we will always be happy to hear your opinion.
CPT. Abnormalskillz [GFX CO] reports that the relaunch of personal requests has gone exceptionally well with over 100 avatars and signatures completed since the restart. GFX currently has six full-time designers on staff, leaving four positions open for those interested in serving the community as a graphic designer. Requests for new designs can be submitted here.
GFX is still looking for more members/designers who want to help TAW community in a bit different way, creating graphics. Right now GFX has 6 designers and we are still hoping to get to 10.
You can request graphics here http://taw.net/wikis/operations/graphics-requests.aspx (please read before submitting)

TSO Division Update
-Tichtac
The beginning of the year brought us a lot of high-energy activity from the TAW community. Many new streamers presented themselves on the channel. The games we saw in January were: Escaped from Tarkov, CS: GO, For Honor, The Division, Starcraft 2, Digital Combat Simulator and World of Warships. A big thanks to all of the streamers!
They streamed for a combined time of 130 hours. For this performance, they received a total of 598 new followers and 15,980 views on the channel. Not only that, the chatters were there too with a blistering 25,800 lines of chat written. January has been an outstanding month! Thanks to all that came in to watch, follow, chat, and encourage the streamers!
A Special thanks to all the streamers and all the games supporting them who gave their time and effort to broadcast on the twitch.tv/TAWtv channel this month!
