This new page was born out of the idea that the majority of TAW is built around our non-commissioned members. This page will represent those members with questions that will give insight into various subject matter, both personal and TAW related. Could you tell our readers a little about your personal life, e.g. where you’re from, do you work or are you still in school.
I’m a 32 years old Swede who works at the legal and administrative apartment of a county council (Sweden consists of 20 self-governing local authorities, sort of like American states but their main responsibility is publicly funded health care)I live with my 8 year old cat Benjamin. Personality wise, I really enjoy having alone time and I’m very good at keeping my cool.My online handle Spenen means “the teat” in English...
Could you give our readers some background on your gaming career?
I’ve played games since I was a little kid, starting with Atari and the Nintendo Game & Watch portable games. When I was around 7 my parents gave me a Nintendo (the original NES). I’ve also played on PC since I was young, probably starting around when Win 3.1 was around and you had to run your games from DOS. Getting your soundcard to properly work with the games was alwasys exciting!
I really got into shooters when the counter-strike mod was released as a beta for Half-Life around 1999. I played Counter-Strike from beta 2 up to 1.6 throughout my entire teenage years. After Counter-Strike, I played a little bit of Battlefield but I really disliked how that game handled the unlock system. When Overwatch came it captured the same excitement I felt when playing the original Counter-Strike so now I’m hooked on that game.
What brought you to the TAW community?
I was getting tired of playing Overwatch alone and was looking for people who enjoyed serious teamwork but could also have fun at the same time. My IRL friends also play Overwatch from time to time but they don’t really understand the concept of teamwork *cough* casuals *cough* so I usually just end up getting frustrated playing with them :D
Thus I went to the official Battle.net forums to look for an active gaming community and TAW piqued my interest. It felt very organized and serious which was the main draw for me. Since TAW had been around a long time and had many active game communities (for different games that is) I thought TAW was a good choice of community to invest my time in.
What was your first impression of TAW?
My first impressions have been great. I like the fact that there are mandatory events and I think the leaders do a good job of organizing everything. Since I joined I’ve already found a team to play with here so I got exactly what I was looking for when I joined TAW.
From your point of view, what is one of the most important benefits of being in a gaming community such as TAW and why?
Having a larger gaming community helps you find likeminded people more easily than just relying on dumb luck. There are all sorts of diverse people within TAW with different personalities, goals, ambitionss, humour etc so I think anyone can find likeminded people to play with. Some people play to win, some people don’t care about winning but just want to mess about and have fun while doing so. No matter why you play, I’m sure you can find friends to play with.
Do you at this point in time, have any aspirations of taking on a leadership role? If yes, why?
So far I haven’t really been thinking about it as I think the current leadership does a fine job. I’d be happy to help with stuff and offload the higherups if there ever is a need but I’m not actively trying to get a leadership position, if that makes sense.
Do you have any special hobbies or activities outside of TAW?
I enjoy making music, mainly electronic, and I have a small studio in my apartment that I fiddle around with. I’ve also been trying to learn Japanese for some odd years now, it’s going so-so… If anyone else is trying to learn the language and wants a speaking partner, let me know :D
Shoutouts to my family and my cat!
